Guitar Practice - (Part 1) : Make It Your Priority!

by Kathy Unruh

Every student realizes that guitar practice is important if they wish to

become a better musician. Even so, many have difficulty establishing a

routine of regular practice. Other responsibilities have a way to squeeze

in a job, a lifestyle Holic, leaving little room left for personal reasons.

Even teenagers and children are over-fished in these days with school and

other extra-curricular activities. So what is the secret of creating an

effective guitar practice schedule? The answer: MAKE YOUR PRIORITY!

This may seem simple to some and not others, but it is absolutely essential

to becoming a good guitarist. Priority means something only to put

everything in order of time and importance. Now, it's increasingly easier

to set priorities when there is a desire to perform or achieve a particular

result. So, with one goal in mind when you practice the guitar will help

you stay focused and give a sense of purpose.

According to the Scribner-Bantam English Dictionary, the word "practice"

means:

- For work or pursue a profession
- Carry out often to learn
- To teach by frequent repetitions, exercise

To make your guitar practice a priority, try to think about how you would

do with your work or school work. I do not mean that this should be a

hassle, but an important need. Schedule a time each day to practice your

guitar, and sticking to it. Be firm in your decision. Mark in your diary or

on your calendar. You start to see an overall improvement in your ability

when you practice the guitar on a regular basis.

There will be times when you feel like jumping and other times when there

seem to be going nowhere. But understand that the guitar is one of the most

difficult to become truly competent, then you will need to guard against

discouragement. I have a friend who plays piano, cello and violin. Decided

to take the classical guitar and has confessed that he was the most

difficult I've ever tried to learn. So please record your progress for

personal encouragement and an incentive to persevere.

The commitment and determination are two of the most important keys to the

pursuit of success. Talent and natural abilities a definite plus, but many

talented students lack the discipline of the guitar. To succeed you must

learn to cultivate and maintain your natural ability through regular

practice guitar. Competence is developed by continually honing, testing and

perfecting your gift. Do not just take for granted, be prepared to work

hard. All great guitarists have this thing in common: they have guitar

practice a priority! So begins the same direction, keeping this in mind ...

1. Make your guitar practice a priority
2. Establish a calendar of days of practice
3. Commit to regular
4. Targets set for the short and long term (take note when it is achieved)
5. To persevere despite the difficulties
6. It is determined to succeed

First of all, fun to play the guitar and learn new things, have fun! I

remember practicing the guitar like an adventure. With so many guitar

styles and different techniques, there is always something to discover.

Life is short, so take some time to do what you love and be happy!
