How To Start Your Own Band

by Kathy Unruh

From time to time a guitar student will express a desire to be in a band

one day. If this is your ambition too, then read on. If you're a guitarist

or not is immaterial. If you're a singer or a musician of talent, the

question is, you will be in a band? In this section you will find some

helpful ideas on getting started in this direction.

One of the first things you need to do is to gain exposure for you. This

can be as easy as following three simple steps:

1. Who knows you want to start a band.

(Word of mouth is one of the best advertising strategies)

2. Make a flyer to put up around the city (in music stores, schools, on

billboards, etc.)

3. Place an ad in all local newspapers

Here's an example of something that you could say your advertising:

"The guitarist looking for people interested in starting a Christian rock

group. Looking for a singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer. The focus will

be on sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music. If you have a

desire to use your gifts of music in this way, please call (insert your

name and phone number) for an interview. "

You can make this announcement, as detailed and generic as you need. The

important thing is to have a clear idea of your mind that you want in your

group. Need a bassist, singer, drummer ...? What kind of qualifications or

experience that you expect? Is age a factor? Note that a list of questions

and keep near the phone. When you call someone, you're ready to have the

right to interview on site.

Try to make your questions require a yes or no answer, or a very short

response. In this way, it will be easier for you to take notes. If someone

looks like a good potential partner Band, getting their phone number and

tell them that you want back once you have your interviews.

Try not to wait too long (between 2-4 weeks), if possible. When you're

ready, review your notes and decide who you want to call. Set a time that

is convenient for those who have chosen to respond to the chosen location.

This is important if you want to establish yourself as the author of the

band, to maintain its influence on the direction.

Let me add a word of caution here. It is recommended to "play safe", it

invites you to your home until you get to know them a bit 'better. After

all, they are foreigners, but it's your call, of course.

You want to keep the first meeting in May with members of the new group of

very low key. Use the time to make introductions, share past experiences,

set goals, discuss ideas, etc. This will give you an opportunity to measure

whether you think each person will be able to work together and agree.

Avoid egocentric people like the plague, because it will only create

friction with other band members. To assess all fairly, but realistically.

It 'best to get rid of a rotten apple in one go, rather than allowing them

to ruin the excitement for the rest of the group.

After the meeting first band, you can point to the next by an informal jam

session. Right now, you can get an idea of whether the group gel or not.

But do not be too hasty in your decisions! I remember once "auditioned" for

a group and be aware that I could just relax and enjoy the experience. Was

a local group that was known a few years and often wanted to be a part.

Even though I had already gained considerable experience in building hand,

was different. And 'Someone else' thing. Nothing seems to go well!

After I returned home that evening, I was sure to remember. The surprise

was, they did! However, the second time was not much better, but have

decided to give me another chance and invited me to return once more. It 'a

good thing for me, for the third time was the charm. Our voices and music

blended so perfectly that I knew was, I share this story so you can give

your young band again just to take off. If nothing seems to trigger a spark

after having given a good amount of time, then you might want to reconsider

your options. It's something that you will be able to determine.

Well, that's all to do really. Once you have the elite members of your

party, you're ready to start making music! If you have some original songs,

be sure to share with others. See if someone else in the band wrote songs,

too. Be open, honest and willing to do almost everything. If you set your

priorities first, will help you stay focused for all the ups and downs as

in May. And always remember: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."
