How To Change Your Guitar Strings

by Kathy Unruh

Change your guitar strings might make you feel a little 'uncomfortable at

first, especially if you've never done before! But it is very simple and

should become an integral part of guitar maintenance. First, though, the

time to make some personal observations such as:

* Which way should you turn the tuning keys to tighten or loosen the

strings of the guitar?
* How are aligned from the nut to the bridge?
* Where is the heaviest?

Taking mental notes will probably save you some frustration and make the

job much easier in the long term.

I would like to remove all the strings of the guitar during the process to

give my guitar a thorough cleaning, but you can delete them one at a time,

if you prefer. Below you will find some useful step by step instructions.

Once you've made a couple of times your confidence starts to grow and

should not be necessary to refer to these passages.

Guitar Care and maintenance tools:

- Needle-nose PLYERS (to cut string ends)
- String Winder
- Cotton Fabric
- Guitar Cleaning Polish (do not use furniture polish, oils, or wax)

WITHDRAWAL OF guitar strings

Acoustic Guitar

1. Using the string of Winder, begin slowly loosening the string (s) until

completely slack.

2. Con-PLYERS August nose, carefully take the string from the capstan (the

part that winds around) and pull through the hole until it is free.

3. Taking the Winder string again, use the cut at the end of it to enter

the PIN code on the bridge. Gently pull the pin until it comes out of the

hole.

4. Thoroughly clean the surface of the guitar.

Classical Guitar

Follow steps one and two above. When you get to step three, take your nose

PLYERS needle and carefully loosen the knot of eight on the bridge. Pull

the string free.

Electric Guitar

Follow the same procedure described for an acoustic guitar. However, if you

have an electric guitar with a movable bridge you may want to contact your

local music store and ask them to show how to do it safely. If the bridge

is moved from its correct position, will not be able to tune your guitar

when you're done.

RE-STRINGING YOUR GUITAR

Acoustic Guitar (Acoustic Strings Try)

1. Bend the end of the chain of balls of light and place it in the hole

under the bridge. Some acoustic guitars are not pin. When this happens,

just pull into the hole.

2. Align the grooves of the chain pin. Insert the pin into the hole, making

sure it is safe.

3. Take the other end and plug the hole on the capstan.

4. Pull it through leaving a fair amount of spring between the winch and

the deck.

5. Fold the rope at the point where it comes through the capstan to keep it

secure.

6. Look beyond your eyes begin to turn the key in your left hand.

7. As you are winding, apply tension to the rope with his right hand to

help keep it taught. Be sure to roll in the right direction! On the bass

strings, you will be winding counter-clockwise (away from you). On the

ropes going in the opposite direction.

8. Continue to wind each string until all the relay is taken. Do not worry

about tuning yet.

9. Cut any excess length.

Classical Guitar (Classical Strings site here)

1. Enter the string through the hole at the top just below the bridge.

2. Pull about 3 inches.

3. Taking her to tie power, passing the string itself below the initial

entry point.

4. Get on the block still attached to the end and wrapped around her in a

figure eight pattern types.

5. Insert the other through the hole on the capstan.

6. Wrap the cable around the back and then in itself to secure it in place.

7. As described above, begin to turn the key with the left hand while

maintaining some tension with the others until all of the relay is taken.

With a classical guitar, we will proceed to closing in a clockwise

direction on the bass strings and treble.

8. Keep the guitar strings as straight as possible to continue the winch

through the die and down the neck.

9. You should not have any excess string length, but if you made the cut.

Electric Guitars (Electric Strings Get Here)

Follow the same procedure described for the acoustic guitar.

* Note - with some electric guitars, like Fender, the strings are fed

through the back of the guitar.

Well, that's all there is to change the guitar strings. I hope you found

this information useful. If you need help to rebuild an environment your
