How to Create Your Own Indie Artist Press Release

by Kathy Unruh

Creating a press release can be one of the best ways for an independent

artist or band to earn some 'instant media exposure for themselves. And you

know, like me, that exposure is the name of the game nowadays.

Although the global network has opened up many new possibilities for

independent artists, the competition can be daunting. So if you have any

news worthy of the editor (ie a new CD for sale, or a concert of saliva,

etc.), then a press release can be just the ticket to give you an

advantage. It will provide the necessary publicity so people know who you

are, so that your music is heard.

To make the best first impression to your readers, your press release

should be well written, informative and developed. Be careful not to lose

the attention of your readers, adding too many unnecessary details.

Sticking to the facts, explaining who you are and what you have to offer.

In general, I prefer to write a story in third person, when I create my own

press release. In asking me questions of a journalist can ask me, I am able

to think more freely and objectively.

Examples of questions to ask and answer:

[Reporter] - Who are you: What is the name of your group?

[Band] - We have decided to call our group "Tangerine Sunshine".

[R] - What kind of music you play?

[B] - This is a bit 'eclectic and difficult to define a kind of mixture

between alternative and rap.

[R] - I heard just recorded a new CD. When it is available to the public?

[B] - Yes, it's called "Mixed Emotions" and we are really happy with how it

happened. Will be available next week.

[R] - Where can I obtain a copy of the CD?

[B] - will be available on our website (URL) and various other retail

outlets (identify).

[R] Super! How many songs are on your album?

[B] Twelve.

[R] - Why did you choose "Tangerine Sunshine" for a name?

[B] - We love the colorful and positive image that it represents.

Of course, all the names mentioned above are fictitious and illustration

are only meant to show how you could organize the information you want

included in your press release. It can be modified in various ways

according to their needs. Once the fictional reporter has gathered all the

facts, you're ready to write.

Here's a simple scheme to use:

THE ONE

One of the most important is to start the press release with a catchy

title. We want to make sure that will draw the reader's attention right

from the start.

FIRST ITEM

Obtain the information that (name of your group, etc.) and what you have to

offer the first paragraph. Keep the who, what, when, where, why and how the

questions before you write will help stimulate the creative process.

POINT

In the second paragraph of the release, you can go into more detail

shortly. You may want to describe the style of your music, or say something

more about upcoming events. If yes, is the place to do it.

Third paragraph

In this third and last section can briefly say something about other people

who have participated in a project or event. Whatever you are not covered

in your press release yet, but I feel it is important, you can add here.

Please include all contact information you have, including a Web address or

e-mail.

When your release is ready, after checking the spelling errors in

typography and grammar, go ahead and post it on your site and / or your

blog. Send it to as many sites as you can find free PR. Mi2n.com is good

for musicians and independent artists to begin.

You should also send the press release with a letter to all local

newspapers in your area. Put "Attention: Editor" above the address on the

envelope and, if possible, a photograph.

Remember to send an email to all your friends, relatives and neighbors too.

This is your moment to shine, so as to reach the stars!
