HOW TO COPYRIGHT SONGS

by Kathy Unruh

Have you ever wondered how the songs copyright?

If you're a songwriter, it's likely that you have. There are many variables that can enter the registration of a copyright may seem a bit 'overwhelming at first. Hopefully this article will shed light on the subject in order to understand the process a little 'better.

Here are some general questions people have asked me about how copyright original songs and lyrics. The answers are based on my knowledge and experience. As you read through them you can only get an overview in respect of your questions.

Question

It is reasonable to copyright the words alone, and then add the record - is not the best way to do it. It cost more money?

Answer:

The text of a song are legally protected from the moment it is written. Be sure to identify yourself as the original author by adding your name and the date on the lyric page. Here's what the law says:

"Protection of copyright exists from the moment the work is created in fixed form. The copyright in the work of authorship immediately becomes the property of the author who created the work. Only the author or those deriving their rights through the author can legitimately claim copyright. "~ Library of Congress

Saving lyrics with the Library of Congress is limited to providing legal testimony as to who is the author.

Personally, I do not bother to record the lyrics of a song separately from the music, because I think it's a waste of time and money.

Question

If other people wrote the music, making these works must be sent separately, even if someone else is the creator / owner of the songs?

Answer:

No, but must be given to authors of music to send the form. Space is provided on the form (PA). The last song I recorded was a small section of music for cello, which was created by another person. The lyrics and melody of the basic guitar parts, etc., were created by me and my husband. We used a form at all.

Question

If more books are recorded at the same time, there is a fee for each poem? If many songs are part of a musical is a fee for each song, or music?

Answer:

Multiple works may be stored as a compilation for a fee. This is what I did with my first album. I wrote six songs and my friend has written six songs. I created all the parts and the guitar accompaniment for all songs on the album, plus a couple of songs organized by my friend. We recorded the songs together in a common name of the group, and we were able to retain the copyright for each song.

I hope that the information contained in this article was helpful. The Library of Congress is an excellent free resource that will answer any questions you may have about copyrighting.
