Dick Bogle covered a lot ground and was associated with a party. In early 1960 I was pumping a ticker at the cop shop in the 2nd and oak, which was not a joke. Bogle was a policeman in the east and we met each other from time to time due to a mutual friend, William Hilliard. Between them they have broken the barriers of color everywhere, Hilliard became the first black editor of a newspaper, America's largest (if not mistaken), Bogle first black again on television in West Coast and the Black member in the Commission of the City of Portland.
Association was much closer Katu, where I worked with Bogle for nearly eight years. If the Oregonian, I covered Nola Porter, a beautiful singer, who was married Sidney Porter, the legendary pianist. Sidney, when he died, Portland lacks a great jazz musician and a great place, Sidney, and Bogle met Nola. Worked.
What does this mean? Both Bogle and Hilliard, while very serious about promotion of blacks, were strongly opposed to separatism and Bogle was proud of his relationship with the white police officers. But I was there in the workshop of the Conference of Parties to hear murder in Williams Avenue called "homicide offense." It was not easy for him.
The conventional wisdom is that Bogle was elected to the City Commission because of exposure to television. There is certainly some truth to this. But it was also the son of an influential family in civil cases for many years. His mother, Kathleen, was a formidable defender of the minority (and not just black) Rights Oregon and an important voice in one of the best television documentaries produced in Portland, Jon Tuttle "local color".
It is expected that many of the dead, but I will raise the charge of sexual harassment, which was probably cut short the political career Bogle. I was a man during this period and may well have been the same charge. The reason for the implementation is the manner in which he has handled. He went to talk shows and has tried to help people come to address the problem.
