If you were hoping for a show at Red opening round of the Latin Jazz Festival in Portland Thursday, she did not.
Have more. You got different. You Luciana Souza for more than 90 minutes of pure voice and the song that earned him four Grammy nominations and a reputation of making the poetry of jazz and poetry.
The Brazilian, born Souza, studied at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and New England Conservatory of Music, is more than a singer. She is a composer, poet, genius, scat, and brilliantly under-performer Ella Fitzgerald, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and bossa nova boy whose father, Walter Santos and fellow Brazilian Antonio Carlos Jobim. Reaches its range of James Taylor and Brian Wilson, if attacked roots in South America for this event. Her samba rhythms and phrasing are undeniably Brazilian, despite his 25 years to absorb American music.
Who needs a drummer with her around? Ran her hand pads, felt and played the tambourine, triangle, while she sings in Portuguese and English. Still, the atmosphere was more minimalist than showy.

Larry Koons virtuoso guitarist who collaborated on his last CD, "Tide", and accompanied him to Toronto born bassist David Piltch, with Souza who had never worked. Piltch, who took advantage of Blood, Sweat and Tears in his teenage days and singers like kd lang and Madeleine Peyroux later, is a dynamic player. OK. It 'been excellent and a helluva showcase, but maybe Souza could take a chance on a top-notch bass Portland.
